Composting and building tomorrow

We always find it amazing how many people do know where their food comes from. It is just not
something we think a lot about.  We are changing that. We have 100 3rd grade students now learning about compost and growing in Atlanta, Augusta GA and Seattle WA.  This was a project that required a lot of thought and creativity.

We found a place and started gathering and talking.  These were the conversations that we needed to have.  We talked to teachers who talked to their students.  We made sure that these students knew that our Earth starts with earth.  We talked to them about soil and how it works and that conversation started with compost.
Visitors to the pile

We talked to people who were throwing away stuff that could be composted.  There were A LOT! As a society, we throw away more than half of our food. A lot of it can be composted and used to (surprise!) grow more food.

We are talking to our eight year olds about everything that goes into the compost pile and they are able to see how it all comes together.  Our students in Seattle (who are dealing with cold and snow at this writing) are able to see what our students are doing in the 65 degree weather in Atlanta.  They are meeting, via social media and other means, students in Seattle, and Atlanta, and Augusta and soon Haiti and Paris.

Most of all, they are seeing where it starts. They are forming a community.
It helps to have friends in the community to contribute!
