The New Reality- Neo Permaculture
No matter what side of the political spectrum you are on, we cannot deny that the landscape is changing for our public entities and food systems. With school feeding programs losing federal funding and elderly care taking a hit as well, we are looking at bold measures for the future of food.
When we first looked at this project, it was just a chance to teach kids about how plants grow and the way the earth works. Then it evolved into a community awareness initiative where we were able to engage with local restaurants to collect their compost and then with recycling efforts to aid in funding. We are now at a phase where a hundred 3rd graders in Atlanta, Seattle, Greenville, and Augusta are now engaged in growing plants in Atlanta and framing a network for a nationwide permaculture education program.
Traditional permaculture teaches to interact with natural systems and that is a good thing. The Neopermaculture teaches how to interact with systems that have become the new norm; how to deal with plastics, and temperature changes, and more.
We are looking at a change to the landscape and the goal is to adjust to those changes and manage a healthy environment. So we are now engaging in and adjusting to these new challenges.
So what are we doing with the plants that we have grown and the money we have raised? We are going to be giving them away, building programs where kids are learning about their world, and helping those in need at the same time.
This is the first year of this program, but the the third year for the Life Cooperative and we are getting better and better every year. These third graders are next years fourth graders who will help next year's third graders and so on and so on.
