Free Money!
Okay, now that we got your attention, maybe it's not free, but it is the kind of community problem solving that I like to see and be a part of. We have some good food being grown in the area. We have some caring people in the area. We have people who want and need fresh food in the area. The question was, how do we bring them all together and how do we get the best food to the most people?
The answer? The Burke Buck....
How much is the Burke Buck worth? Good question. Just like any other currency, it is worth whatever value one is willing to put on it and our desire for that "value" is to put it towards good and healthy purposes. That is a good thing.
I was talking with a pastor friend of mine about all of the issues that we face with the Maranatha Food Bank. We talked about how people liked the idea of getting free food and how some people essentially "gamed" the system. We also talked about how to encourage people to buy things that are good for them. We had each reached the conclusion that the things that are good for us are the things that are most expensive. We talked about how to get people out to the farmer's markets and how to get them to buy from local growers. So we came up with a bold and not unique experiment. The Burke.
First, we established a fund that anchors the Burke to standard USD. We want to create an incentive for people who are in need to get into a system that is positive for them.
Second, we started to reach out to local growers with a will and a want to help people, to increase their sales, and help build a network and a strong community. Everyone wins.
If they have a bundle of whatever for sale for $5.00 someone could buy completely with Burke Bucks or part with Burke Bucks. The grower can then come to us and get cash, or use it themselves to get things that we sell.
People get a lot more variety...
People get better, healthier food...
More growers get more people out to the markets to do more things.
We even get to recycle some paper in the process.
