100heritage Project: Building a future by preserving the past.

We thought about this.  We have had conversations about this and wondered how to promote heritage breeds of animals and heirloom varieties of vegetables.  Specifically, how to promote the raising of heritage breeds in an area that needs new blood, so to speak.

The 100Heritage project came from the idea that we can revitalize an industry, build a town, and create a foundation of sustainable economic and ecologic sales based on preserving the past while firmly embracing the future.

How do we start, though?
There are so many people with land and difficulty managing it. We see large swaths of land owned by people who simply do not have the muscle or the time to maintain it.  The option becomes to sell to large producers or let the land go fallow.

The 100heritage project has a number of goals...
Promote the raising of heritage breed animals and crops by providing the foundations for raising that livestock and crops and that means providing the animals to start, seeds, and more...
Creating a support network that provides the knowledge and the resources to get started and to keep going.
Examining outlets for products both direct and peripheral.  For example, our first product/project

is the American Guinea Hog.  How do we sell not only the hogs, but bacon, ham, lard, etc.  On top of that, how can we make this area known for these products?

We want to make the CSRA the home of heritage and heirloom.  We are looking for people with a willingness to learn and a willingness to teach.

Ideal candidates for the 100Heritage project will:

Have at least one acre of viable land in the CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) to be dedicated specifically to this project.

Be willing to dedicate a minimum of two years to the project.  Year 1 will be learning and year two and beyond will be teaching.

Be committed to responsibly raising these animals and plants in economically and ecologically sound ways.

We are looking at these and other issues and if you have just needed a nudge in the right direction to get you on the road to raising your own heritage breed of animal, then please contact us ASAP at TLCwaynesboro@gmail.com  Perhaps we can get you started in the right direction by providing the animals, seeds, and/or the support that you need.

We are out to make this the home of Heirloom and Heritage.

  1. Count me in! I already have Tennessee fainting goats and have ordered Rhode Island White chickens from a member of the livestock conservancy. We at urban grange wholeheartedly support the mission of the 100 heritage project.
