...and on the lighter side of farming!
Last week, we talked about the young man who was being asked by his city to remove the garden from his front yard. We got a lot of feedback on our take of the situation. It was really very interesting that it was our most popular blog post to date. It generated long discussions and some people thought he was in the right; some thought he was in the wrong. We had a short chat with him and his heart seems to be in the right place. We will check back in with him soon to see how things are unfolding. That post was just part one and not everything can be resolved so easily.
Why was that post so popular? It was posted on a number of sites and groups because we (I) genuinely wanted to generate a discussion...mission accomplished. Last week's article gave us hope more than anything else. See, The Life Cooperative deals with people every day who are farmers and who want to get deeper into farming and the biggest testament to the negative articles that we post is that we are seeing people are not the least bit scared of what these things mean. In fact, we have gotten a couple of people who are more interested.
Bethany and her family brought home two newborn heifers yesterday morning with plans to get another today while I am writing this. The family got them at auction and they are already settling in at their new home. They even enjoyed the ride home in the back of a minivan. There are so many things they could be doing, but they opted for farming and are not looking back.
So we are seeing a growing movement, despite the negatives. The great thing that we see is that people are getting into any of these ventures lightly and in the weeks to come we are going to look at some of the deeper issues of farming. We are going to follow along on the adventures of Bethany and her family and see how the heifers are coming along.
For now, it is good to be reminded that there are some big things coming in the farming world and they are not Monsanto based. In fact, we think that Alan Jackson said it best...
