Dumpster Diving...Closing the Restaurant Part 2.

I named my business Winnie Mae's after my mother.  Yes, I am a momma's boy at times but the main reason was what it means to be a part of a family.  I remember once when I was in college, I was going through a really rough time.  I had already been on my own for some time.  I had joined the Army right out of high school and then right to college.  As times got rougher for me at school though, I wondered where I could go.  So I hopped in my car and made the 3 hour drive to my parents house.

I was the youngest of 9 kids so when I moved out, it was just my parents, alone, rattling around their empty nest.  My parents are people of habit, and I did not call (this was in the days before cell phones). It was ten pm by the time I had even left school.  I pulled into the driveway, walked up the path, and used my key to open the door as I had done a million times before when I was growing up.  I walked in and went straight to my old bed, which was still made and waiting for me.

Now, some years on, it is strange to me that many people do not have that luxury.  As I write this, I am in the air conditioning and hiding from the throes of the intense Georgia heat. Still, I am amazed and ever will be that there are people who are huddled under trees, struggling to find shade, with no
where to go.

I was moved to write this because in a few minutes, I am going to go out and plant another row of watermelon and more corn.  Then I am going to take a nap.  I am going to sleep for a few hours until te heat of the Georgia sun goes down and then get up and go dumpster diving in the late of the night with some homeless people.  A few years ago, I spent a month on the streets of Atlanta and it tested me. I met people then who were experiencing homelessness and who are still struggling with a new crop of homeless coming every day.

Tonight, I am going to take a walk in their world again.

We are a nation that throws more than half of its food away,  Still there are people starving,  Still there are people who are dying of diabetes, heart problems and more.  We know the answers.  The good stuff is expensive and hard to get and the bad stuff is cheap and on every corner.  Our first podcast is going to take a look at this.

The irony is that tonight I am going out to record what is called "b-roll" in the production business.  It is the background you hear and see when listening to something and we rely on the speaker to put it into context.  What is ironic is that in this case, the "b-roll", the voices of those who are struggling, should be the most important part.

We are going to be doing things like this for as long as we can.  If you would like to help, go to our Patreon page and give a buck or two to help at https://www.patreon.com/epochconvergence
