Getting the Tomatoes To Market

This time last year, we were working with local restaurants to get compost material.  When the spring came, our students started planting and then things started growing.  Now we are looking at a full fledged organic garden and we have to ask ourselves, "What are we going to do with all these tomatoes?"

Lemonade stands are a bit outdated.  Right now, we are doing something that is a bit more intense.  Our students are working on a summer project that we hope will be a bit more educational and we have a singular goal, get what they have grown to market.

We wanted to show our kids the full cycle of the garden.  We wanted give them a sense of community and civic engagement.  We wanted to use this as an opportunity to teach them about responsibility of money.  So, we are going a little above and beyond the lemonade stand model.

Earlier this year, we were able to donate $150.00 to an Atlanta area school for their lunch program, so that a few students would not have to worry about lunch shaming.  Our students are confident they can raise a bit more than that, fund this project and learn a bit.

Right now students are learning a lot of really cool things about economics and how a business gets started.  They are also learning ways to effectively give back to their community and create a sustainable model for growth in every aspect.

We are starting with basic terminology and asking the question, "What does it take to start a
business?"

What are our products?  Who will buy what we sell and where do we find them?  What are all the components that need to be met to get our tomatoes to market?

It is going to be an interesting summer!
