A Community Built On....Garbage?

Several months ago, I decided to start a composting operation, There were many hurdles to overcome
and I was somewhat ready for it. I knew it would be labor intensive but that is the key, isn't it? When we look at how much we throw away on a regular basis that can be used and how it can be used, it is really interesting to see the real world impacts that can be made.
Inputs and capital...
The key was to look for what was being thrown away and evaluate how it could be used; given a second life. People were throwing away, literally, tons of useful matter each night after preparing meals; each day after lunch and so on... It was being wrapped up in plastic bags thrown in bins and hauled to landfills. Week after week.
Going to people and asking them for their garbage is not easy. There has to be a willingness on their part to give it to you. They have to want to give it to you; to opt to throw it in a specific bin rather than in the common garbage bag. Throwing it in the bag is easier. Because these actions are small, they are forgettable. They have the potential to be a nuisance; one more thing to think about in a world with soccer practice and business meetings and so on and so on.
So we take their garbage. We let it sit for a while. Then we sift through it. Then we use it to grow plants, or in our case, sell it to fund our efforts to help people in the community. To date, we have raised over $3000.00 geared towards helping the Decatur community specifically and the planet overall!
