Six Months of Composting in Decatur
A project that was started on a whim has grown and grown. I never wanted to have an end goal; a specific amount of compost that I wanted to collect. The idea was to keep it going, grow, adapt and sustain it. Now, at the six month mark, we have collected over 15 tons of compostable material from nearly 200 families, two Starbucks and just recently, The Pullman and Dulce Bakery in Kirkwood. We have been able to expand to Doraville and Chamblee as well as hire a young man saving money for college. I have personally traveled over 2000 miles on our bikes. The goal is to do more...so much more.
We want to take on 30 more residential customers and top out at that for the next few months. We want to hone our skills, set our bikes to gather more and prepare for an amazing fall! Are you ready?
If you want to join up, we ask for a one time payment of $25 for a year's subscription.
We do an NPR style request at the beginning of each month, just put a couple of bucks in a plastic baggie in your bucket...or don't. Put your garbage to good use.
Once you subscribe, within two weeks a reclaimed 5 gallon bucket will arrive at your door. Spend a week filling it up with kitchen scraps and whatever. We can take anything but chemicals or animal poop. Once a week, on a specified day, we will stop by your house, empty and clean your bucket and start all over again.
We do a yearly compost allotment of 100 pounds per person once you are vested for at least 60 days.
That's just as a basic composter. We also have more ways you can get involved as member of The Life Co-operative. This includes all sorts of perks all year long.
