nooks and crannies

Yesterday, I thought about all of the ventures that The Life Co-operative was engaging in.  We are growing vegetables, selling coffee, and so much more.  People are always looking for the "instant" return.
We have engaged in the long term construction of a community.  We are interested in sustainable methods of empowering a community and methodologies of real and substantive long term growth.  Ours is a mission to change the mindset.

Today, we harvested 10 pounds of lion's mane mushrooms.  Lion's mane mushrooms are prized for their lobster like taste as well as their medicinal qualities.  They are thought to be not only delicious, but help with memory.

Four weeks ago, a couple of our students decided that mushrooms were a good place to start and that these were a good mushroom to start with.  Today was the first harvest.  Soon, we will see harvests of oyster mushrooms and then white mushrooms in the new year.

The lion's manes were sold and the money was used to purchase more seeds for the garden that we have started.  We also bough bleach and alcohol and containers for the growth and transport of more.
These days it is so amazing to see the the fruits of hard work; of late nights running around in the dark; of early mornings and hard afternoons.  We got a lot done and we are looking to do a lot more.  We are so glad you are following along.  It is so amazing what you can grow in the nooks and crannies of the urban environment!
