The Mushroom Project...Day 8
The goal is to have an oyster mushroom in my hand in 45 days. Today, in the rain and cold, I went to check on the spawn and see how it was progressing. First, I looked and made sure that there was nothing in any of the chambers I should be concerned with. I was looking for anything that wsa off color or that could contaminate the rest of the chamber. There was nothing in any of the chambers that gave me any worry.
The spawn was spreading through the substrate of coffee grounds quickly. Other mushroom enthusiasts say that one can expect the mycelium to double in size every day. It appears to be doing just that. It is easy to see the black, moist coffee being overtaken by the fluffy white strands.
At this point, it is really exciting to watch. The next task is to begin duplicating the process so that we can have a number of successive harvests.
