The 13th Grade...How it all ties together.
I was walking home one night and there, on the side of the road, was a young man standing next to his car. His face was lit by the screen and he was frantically typing into his smart phone. The engine was still running, so I didn't think he was stuck but I could hear him dial the phone and explain that he had a flat and that he needed a tow. Next I heard him say, as I passed, that he did not have $125.00 and ask if he could use his parent's credit card. At that, I turned around, told him to hang up the phone and took 20 minutes on a warm summer night, to show him how to change a tire.
When I worked in the restaurant business, I taught a young man to make reservations for his first date. When I worked for a sorority, I taught a few young ladies to make macaroni and cheese from scratch. All of these people were in college and, in just a general sense, lacking skills that, though not necessary for day to day life, would come in handy.
Lately, one of our biggest projects has been engaging with young men and women in teaching them these small skills that make life a little easier, a little more manageable. We are working on the 13th grade program; working with these young people in a transitional point in their lives to teach them the basics of life and society.
If there is one thing that we have worked for with The Life Cooperative, it is foundational issues. By that we mean that we try to bypass problems before they become problems. We would like to, for example, work with young people on good credit management before they are 30 and in serious trouble.
This is going to be an amazing summer and it is going to be simple. We are going to rent two homes and have people who are in that transition from high school to college, the military, or whatever the next phase of their life is and work with them to see if we can make that transition better. Think of it like summer camp for late teens.
We have a question for you...What do you wish you had known the moment you had gotten your high school diploma? Call us at 719-357-7003 and leave a message to tell us what you wish you had known. Your call may be going into a podcast so be ready for that!
If you know a deserving person between 17 and 21 who wants to live rent free for three months and work on some amazing projects please let us know at grow@thelifecooperative.org . Help us help others change the world!
