The Homeless Outreach 2016, Journey to 5 Points.
Ok, So I did this with another organization some time ago. The idea and the challenge is to learn the truth about homelessness. People have very specific ideas of homelessness and from what I hear and understand, they are not true. There have always have pros and there have always been cons but each side discounts the truth of the other. I will get into that more shortly, but for right now I want to address the first level, and that is the "why"
This whole thing started on Facebook. One "friend" was saying that she was angry that a homeless person did not take the leftover food she was offering. I said there had to be a reason for it. She said if the person was truly hungry, they would have taken it. I later found out that there were several reasons why someone may not have taken the food, but again, I will get into that shortly.
I vowed that I would find out the reason. When I would be asked about doing outreach things like this before, it would be an evening. People would get sleeping bags, cocoa and coffee, and hang out for the night in a clean, safe environment.
My goal was to go out for a little longer than that and be a little less comfy. I ended up lasting about a month. Some days I would pass my condo, with the keys in my hand, wanting to go in and have a beer and a shower.
I was younger then. I could do more...
There was was facebook, twitter was in its infancy, and there was no instagram... Pinterest...eh
This is going to be a challenge.
We are calling this The Journey To Little Five Points because I am leaving from Doraville and heading south. It is only 14 miles.
So here we go... This week is going to a march south and figuring out how to be homeless.
